Moving from Mexico to Scotland marked the beginning of my journey as a postgraduate student at the University of Glasgow's School of Social and Political Sciences. As someone with a passion for exploring new cultures and academic opportunities, I found myself both excited and nervous about this next chapter in my life.
A series of purposeful steps shaped the path that led me to the University of Glasgow, each one bringing me closer to a university and a city that matched my goals and aspirations. I’m Sarah Penchyna, born and raised in Pachuca, a town in Mexico, and I’m pursuing my postgraduate degree in Media, Culture & Society. Although studying abroad is a quite common for many people in Mexico, it wasn’t always part of my plan. Over time, however, the idea grew on me, eventually becoming the most natural next step for my academic and personal growth.
Why I Chose Media, Culture & Society
My interest in media and cultural studies has developed throughout my academic journey. I have always been fascinated by how people create narratives, how communities produce content, and how cultural influences shape our perception of reality. When I began searching for postgraduate opportunities, the MSc in Media, Culture & Society stood out to me as an ideal programme.
What drew me to the programme was its interdisciplinary approach. It explores the ways communication systems interact with social structures and personal identities in the context of ongoing global transformations. The curriculum encourages critical thinking and practical application, striking a balance between theory and real-world experience. I believe this broad perspective will be valuable for my professional development, no matter where my career takes me.
Choosing Glasgow
Once I identified the programme I wanted to pursue, the University of Glasgow’s School of Social & Political Sciences quickly became my top choice. Throughout my research, Glasgow consistently stood out for its strong reputation in the social sciences and its curriculum that closely matched my academic interests.
Several factors influenced my decision to study in Glasgow. Scottish culture, with its rich history and unique atmosphere, made the country especially appealing. I wanted to find a place that offered both comfort and intellectual stimulation, and Glasgow delivered on both fronts. The city’s artistic and musical scenes also resonated with my academic interests, making it the perfect fit.
The Application Process
The application process required a lot of patience. I gathered all the necessary documents, wrote my personal statement, obtained references, and submitted my application. Each step had to be completed in sequence, but seeing my application come together was a rewarding experience.
The most challenging part was waiting for the admission decision. When the offer finally arrived, everything moved quickly. I had to schedule a visa appointment, look for accommodation, and complete a host of pre-departure tasks back in Mexico.
Arriving in Scotland
Arriving in Glasgow was straightforward, but adapting to a new environment came with its own challenges. The first big adjustment was the weather: coming from a place with year-round sunshine, I was surprised by how quickly the sun comes and goes in Scotland. I still miss the warmth of my hometown, but I’ve gradually adjusted to Glasgow’s climate.
What truly made a difference, though, was the people. Scots are known for their genuine kindness, and that reputation holds true. From the stranger who helped me find the right bus to the classmates who explained confusing references, I was met with support at every turn. The welcoming atmosphere of Glasgow made me feel at home, even when everything else felt unfamiliar. I’ve found that the friendliness of the city’s residents makes the rainy days much easier to handle.
Looking Forward
Now that I've settled into the MSc programme, I’m constantly challenged to think in new ways, which I truly appreciate. The academic environment is dynamic, filled with lively discussions and thought-provoking readings. The faculty encourages independent thought and curiosity, which has helped me grow both intellectually and personally.
Looking back, my move from Mexico to Glasgow has been a meaningful journey marked by deliberate choices rather than sudden changes. I chose a programme that fits my interests, a city that aligns with my values, and a path that has helped me grow. Even though the sunshine is scarce, I’m grateful for every new experience – I’m learning, growing, and building my future here.
