Comfort Food from Home
Murugi, Kenya
Ugali is made from cornflour and water. It brings me comfort because it's not only a staple meal among Kenyan households but also a childhood favourite of mine.
My mother would mash the ugali in a bowl, add some milk, some butter and sugar and milk cream then serve it warm when I was a kid. I still do the same thing to date! It's warm, filling, delicious and takes me back home!
Tamseel, Pakinstan
I didn't think I would be able to make biryani here. I didn't even have the right rice, and I worried it wouldn't taste the way it's meant to. But somehow, with whatever ingredients I had, the aroma still filled the kitchen the same way it does back home.
It reminded me that comfort isn't about perfection - it's about the feeling a dish brings. Even far from home, one spoonful was enough to bring back warmth, family, and familiarity. It tasted like home, just when I needed it most.
Valerie, Singapore
The one dish I mist the most from Singapore (and the hardest to recreate is Hainanese chicken rice!) Fortunately I managed to ease my cravings with the restaurant Wee Mamak, which sells chicken rice and other Singaporean/Malaysian/Southeast Asian dishes!
Yeukai, Zimbabwe
Sadza with beef stew and covo is my ultimate comfort food because it reminds me of home, family, and the warmth of Zimbabwean tradition.
Asami, Japan
This is beef stew! It's an unmissable staple in a Japanese household, and very easy to make thanks to a pre-packaged roux that's sold absolutely everywhere.
Just toss some carrots, onions, potatoes and meat into a pot, add water and melt the roux, and voila! A delicious, warming stew for the Glasgow winter.

This time of year, when it's rainy and cold, my number one comfort food would have to be a classic grilled cheese sandwich with tomato soup, primarily because it reminds me of my childhood.
Growing up, my school would sometimes have a lunch menu special like grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup, though it wasn't as fancy as how I have it now, it still bring me that special childhood feeling of being at school with no worries, a simpler time.
