The first 1451 Society event hosted by our new Principal and Vice Chancellor, Professor Andy Schofield, was held on campus in April. Over 130 guests joined to meet with old friends and new, and hear a University update.
These events are our opportunity to pass on our thanks to you in person for your support and interest in leaving a gift in your Will to the University and a chance to share news and insider updates.
Professor Schofield shared details of his academic and career journey leading to his new role as Principal, revealing his own Scottish roots (and purchase of Clan Johnstone tartan trousers). He spoke of the privilege of leading the University and how inspiring it was to meet those who care deeply about the University of Glasgow and who have the faith and foresight to trust us with a gift in their Will.
Referencing the challenging global and higher education landscape, he commented:
Access to opportunity matters more than ever. At Glasgow, we are committed to attracting talented students and turning our research into real‑world impact by working closely with communities. Philanthropy makes this possible — helping us grow programmes that create opportunity and change lives, families and communities for the better.”
Carrying on the theme of our 575th Anniversary, we welcomed a display of treasures from Archives and Special Collections including the charter from Mary Queen of Scots, donating money, land and food to allow the University of 1560 to survive, and heard from Cara and Sarah from the University History Society about their research into the History of 12 and 13 Professors’ Square and those who lived there.
